Your Voice is Making a Huge Impact

January 6th, 2015

Friends,

6fd577b7-2d92-49ea-998f-3c868837b3fcAs another year closes I continue to be humbled. Words are not enough to express the gratefulness I feel as I watch our community support this vision overwhelmingly. Every year since founding we have grown boldly. 2014 was no different.

With your help in 2014, My Voice Music:

      • Built a recording studio in SE Portland…we call it MVM Studios, and we are already recording some of our students’ original full-length albums!
      • Served nearly 2,000 youth through partnerships with organizations including Caldera, Friends of the Children, Albertina Kerr Centers, Morrison Child and Family, Mt. Scott Learning Center, the Right Brain Initiative, and others
      • Received the “Top of The Class” award for “innovative after-school programming” by the National After School Association. (We were one of 32 organizations nationally to be awarded!)
      • Hosted rock camps out of MVM Studios for 80 aspiring rockers.
      • Provided paid stipends for our High School Student Leaders.

“I just want people to hear my music and my message. You made that happen for me. Thank you.” – MVM Youth at Mississippi Studios Student Showcase.

In 2015 we will begin to grow year-round programs out of MVM Studios targeting high-school-aged musicians ready to begin recording, engineering, mixing and performing. We will do this while expanding our therapeutic programs and philosophy to even more organizations serving youth in crisis.

I am continually inspired by the youth at My Voice Music, by our staff, our volunteers, and our supporters. We are, all of us, a community of people working to find, to refine, and to share our voices. We
are blessed through this process to the extent we are willing to be vulnerable, to introspect, to share.

Thank you for generously sharing your voice with My Voice Music this year. The growth I see in our youth, in our organization, and even in myself, could not happen without such a rich community contributing to this mission.

Best wishes, and with much gratitude,

Ian Signature

Meet Monica: Outreach & Program Coordinator

November 12th, 2014

MVM Spring Break 14'I’m absolutely thrilled to deepen my involvement with My Voice Music as the new Outreach & Program Coordinator. I’ve been a Program Leader/Music Teacher for My Voice since March 2014. I first heard about MVM from Albertina Kerr’s Volunteer Program Coordinator. After years of being a musician and teacher, I became interested in using music as an expressive and healing art, especially with youth struggling with mental and physical illnesses. During this time, I received a small “seed” grant from The Pollination Project to run a therapeutic music workshop for teens with illness. I approached My Voice to see if they were interested in aligning with my project and in turn, I was able to use their resources and community alliances. This was just the beginning of our relationship.

Soon after, I began working as a teacher in a variety of MVM programming. I realized rather quickly what a unique and progressive music school it is. In my opinion, as a teacher, there is nothing more vital than teaching a child or teenager how to hone, own, and use their creative voice in this world. My Voice implements music programs that help youth write songs and record with little or no musical experience. I have seen the power of youth creating on the spot and discovering their voice in many settings including Portland Public Schools, Caldera Summer Camps, MVM Rock Camps, Albertina Kerr Sub-Acute Center and Youth Villages to name a few. Through MVM, I’ve also taught songwriting workshops, private and group lessons, bilingual toddler music classes, workshops for Right Brain Initiative, and bucket drumming classes for PDX Pop Now.

With these broad and eclectic experiences, I have seen music shift the darkest of moods, uplift the most critical self-doubter or non-believer, and release raw emotions in a positive, productive way. I have seen the pride and self-confidence that youth experience after creating their own song. I have personally witnessed the power of music and self-expression through my work with My Voice Music and I’m excited to develop our programming to reach even more under-served youth in the community. Feel free to reach out and contact me with any comments, suggestions, or questions.

Sincerely,

Monica Metzler
